Getting Started with Puppy Linux

Puppy Linux can boot from CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives, or other portable media. It runs from RAM and doesn't require high system requirements. Running Puppy for the very first time is a straightforward and easy process.

The first step is to choose Puppy Linux version and to download an official release or a Puplet.

Burn a live CD using Windows

Simply burn the downloaded iso file to a recordable CD. You can use a commercial software like Nero or free software like DeepBurner or ISOBurn, and proceed to the next step - Booting Puppy Linux

Creating a bootable live USB drive

The easiest method to create a bootable live USB drive is probably by using UNetbootin.

Download and start UNetbootin and either select Puppy Linux under Distributions drop down or select Disk Image and point to location of your downloaded ISO archive of Puppy Linux. Select USB Drive and the correct drive letter of your USB Drive and click OK. Proceed to the next step - Booting Puppy Linux

Booting Puppy Linux

Restart your computer and insert / plug the CD or other media you used. Enter the BIOS and change the first boot device to CDROM or USB Drive - depending on which media you used. Save and exit the BIOS. Puppy Linux should now boot up on your computer.

Once Puppy Linux finished loading, you will have set up a few options for the keyboard layout and display settings. Pressing enter to all options will use the default and recommended settings.

In a short while, you should see the Puppy Linux desktop.
